Programme Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in General Management at Rajeev Gandhi College of Management Studies (RGCMS) is a rigorous research programme designed to develop scholars with advanced analytical, critical thinking, and research competencies. The programme encourages original research that contributes to management theory, business practice, public policy, and sustainable development.

Under the guidance of experienced research supervisors, scholars undertake systematic and interdisciplinary research addressing contemporary challenges in business, industry, government, and society. The programme is conducted in accordance with the regulations of the University of Mumbai and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Duration:

The duration of the Ph.D. Programme shall be as per the University of Mumbai and UGC Regulations in force from time to time.

  • Minimum Duration: 3 Years (including coursework)
  • Maximum Duration: As prescribed by the applicable University/UGC regulations.

 Eligibility

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. Programme must satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the University of Mumbai and the UGC from time to time.

Applicants should possess a strong academic background, a keen interest in research, and the aptitude to undertake independent scholarly work in the field of Management.

Educational Qualifications

A candidate shall be eligible for admission if he/she:

  • Holds a Master’s Degree in Management or a related discipline from a recognized University.
  • Has secured at least 55% aggregate marks or an equivalent grade in the qualifying Master’s Degree examination, or such minimum percentage as prescribed by the University/UGC.
  • Candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), EWS, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and other reserved categories shall be eligible for relaxation in minimum marks as per the applicable Government of Maharashtra, University of Mumbai, and UGC norms.

The eligibility criteria are subject to revision in accordance with the latest University and UGC regulations.

Entrance Test

Admission to the Ph.D. Programme is based on the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET)/NET/SET conducted by the University of Mumbai or through other eligibility criteria/exemptions as notified by the University from time to time.

The entrance examination generally evaluates candidates on:

  • Research Methodology
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Research Aptitude
  • General Management Concepts
  • Logical and Analytical Reasoning
  • Subject Knowledge

 Interview Process

Candidates qualifying the entrance test (or those exempted as per University regulations) shall be invited for a Personal Interview/Viva-Voce before the Research Advisory Committee.

The interview aims to assess the candidate’s:

  • Research aptitude and analytical ability
  • Understanding of the proposed research area
  • Clarity of research objectives
  • Knowledge of the chosen specialization
  • Potential contribution to management research
  • Communication and presentation skills

Selection shall be based on the candidate’s overall academic merit, research potential, performance in the interview, availability of a suitable Research Guide, and the availability of vacant seats.

Reservation Policy

  • Admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be governed by the Reservation Policy applicable to the Government of Maharashtra, the University of Mumbai, and the UGC.
  • Reservations, relaxations, and concessions for candidates belonging to various reserved categories shall be implemented in accordance with the prevailing statutory provisions.
  • Applicants claiming reservation benefits must submit valid supporting documents in the prescribed format at the time of admission.

 Important Note– All admissions are provisional and are subject to verification of eligibility, submission of required documents, fulfillment of University regulations, and approval by the University of Mumbai.
